★ Trade experts explain why no Hindi or Pan-Indian film clashes with Salman Khan’s films at the box office: “He’s 100% an ORGANIC star; clashing with him can prove SUICIDAL”!
Nov 7, 2023
Salman Khan’s Diwali release Tiger 3 is nearly a week away and the excitement is tremendous. What’s interesting is that it’ll have a solo release of sorts, as no other Hindi or Pan-India South film is clashing on the same day. In fact, Salman Khan has not faced a clash since 2010. The last time that happened was when his 2009 action super-hit film Wanted was released on the same day as Rani Mukerji-starrer Dil Bole Hadippa.
Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Jai Ho (2014), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tubelight (2017), Race 3 (2018), Bharat (2019), Dabangg 3 (2019) and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023) released with no competition. Antim (2021) faced a collision with Satyameva Jayate 2 (2021) but then it didn’t feature the superstar in the lead.
Other stars haven’t been that fortunate. Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale (2015) and Raees (2017) were released alongside Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Kaabil (2017) respectively. SRK is at his best position arguably right now and yet, his next film Dunki will have to share screens with Salaar on Christmas 2023. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha clashed with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan last year. Salman’s last few films have not done well and yet, no one is ready to come on the same Friday as him.
We asked trade experts about this rare phenomenon. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “He has a huge following and is a darling of the masses. The business he has generated over a period of time in mass pockets is phenomenal. Though he has had a rough patch, he's the pied piper of Bollywood.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, exulted, “Salman is a very big hero of the masses. He has always had such a huge fan following; Shah Rukh Khan ka aisa following ab bana hai. Aamir Khan never had such a mass pull. Salman’s craze is one of a kind. Hence, filmmakers are wary of clashing their films with him. Itna bada hero hai, kaun takkar lega iske saath?”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, remarked, “Salman is the only superstar who people want to see on screen. He has the maximum on-screen superstardom out of all the actors. It’s a very critical factor. He’s also not on our social media every time, going to malls, opening ribbons, dancing, etc.”
He continued, “Unfortunately his films have not worked as he hasn’t paid much attention to the storytelling, packaging, direction, etc. He has that power that if he gets these things right, then there’s no stopping him. That’s why many are wary of clashing with him as they know that at least in the opening weekend, their film will get butchered.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise cinema hall in Jaipur, explained, “Salman Khan is an action hero. When no one was doing action, he was the only action excelling in this genre. Somewhere, his confidence shook and he also did non-action films like Tubelight (2017), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), etc. Only Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) worked in this regard. But even when his films were gadbad, they still made Rs. 100 crores plus. There was a time when the hit films of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn did Rs. 100 crores. But Salman’s flop films do Rs. 100 crores even today! And his hit films have done more than Rs. 300 crores. It’s thanks to him that the industry realized the true potential of a Hindi film. Hence, clashing with him can prove suicidal.”
He also said, “He’s 100% an organic star. Even Sunny Deol is.”
Girish Johar added, “If he moulds himself to the sensibilities that cater to his fans and also provides intelligent content, then sky is the limit. I think Tiger 3 will do well. It ticks all the right boxes.”
Taran Adarsh also said along the same lines, “Tiger 3 being a brand and essaying a role that is much-loved, I am sure it’ll have a great run and a huge opener.”

Even though it had a drop in the afternoon, it picked up in the evening, aiming for the 30 crore mark. B. The Unknown As Salaar hits theaters, we're not sure how the shows will be distributed. The reports are mixed, leaving us curious about Dunki's performance in the coming days. In the Bollywood world, Dunki's first day is a bit like a suspenseful movie. It's not a blockbuster start, but there's still hope amidst tough competition.

#FILM REVIEW
Somewhere Chhichhore hits the main nerve of suicidal cases and sungs the bond of friendship. It also gives light moments to laugh.
Annirudh (Sushant Singh Rajput) is divorced with his wife Maya(Shraddha Kapoor),but both are trying to manage their life for their son Raghav. They get deeply shocked. Then Annirudh
decides to treat his son mentally. He narrates the failures and triumphs of his college life. His college life collects his friends Sexa (Varun Sharma),Acid (Naveen Polishetty),Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin),Bevda (Saharsh Kumar),
Mummy (Tushar Pandey) and his wife Maya.
Nitesh Tiwari successfully created a 90's nostalgic feel through flash back.Infact 80% film runs in flashback and scenes of present disturbs the flow.Especially, the scenes of hospital have bit stretched. The film starts with the glimpse of 3 Idiots' suicide part then meets to Jo Jeeta Woh Hi Sikander or Student of the year like college among competition and romance.Yes,the resemblance in the story can not be intentionally, but what if audience compare this predictable screenplay.
The best think about Chhichhore is its depiction of friendship. In one of
instance from film Anni's (Annirudh
) friends come in hospital to see his son on just one call. They not come, but also stay to normalize his critical condition.
If we go with title Chhichhore we will see some vulgar and double meaning jokes.Varun Sharma as Sexa is show topper with fantastic comic timing.Tahir Raj impressed me again after played Shyam in Manto (2018).He played Derek with serious dark face.Sharash kumar as Bevada is too late to play a student.Kota factory fame Kundan Raj works as surprise.
Sushant is good with his charming face and still plays good cricket in film after Dhoni.Shraddha did better than Saaho. Here she holds a good role as college girl plus mother. However, two thinks are not convincing.First Shraddha's makeup doesn't insert her in a mother role. She is too pretty.Second, the relationship between Sushant and his son seems very cool, but in next scene he commits suicide.
Prateek Babbar playing negative from some of his last releases. He clashed alone with Sushant's group of friends and gives competition.
On music movie is not promising at all.Even background music don't work for audience to tell where movie will go.
Well,Chhichhore is a book full of values, lessons of life and meaning of failure. It high on many accounts. It's a family entertainer too.Youths can
share popcorns with their parents. This Friday bollywood gave a good watch.

I got tagged by @vintagesimstress. Dzięki Ania! I haven’t done it in a while so here it goes.
Rules: answer 21 questions, then tag 21 people you want to get to know better.
Nickname: I never had one. My name is quite short so maybe that’s why?

Last thing searched: ts4cc lol
Favourite musicians: I’m too old to fangirl over singers or bands. I mostly listen to whatever’s on the radio or on my ipod playlists. I used to love rock, metal or punk but I’ve never been a part of any subculture. However, I do have a soft spot for Linking Park, Korn, Metallica, Slipknot, etc. I also love listening to classical music, good soundtracks from movies, tv shows, games and even Bollywood, and wrestling themes. And I could listen to anyone with a good English accent forever. Oh, and Lana del Ray.
If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future? Being born in the wrong era is the story of my life. I’d go back in time to see all of my favourite historical figures and then I could die happily.
Do I get asks? I used to. Now, I’m scarcely even here.
Following : 391 people
Would you rather be rich or famous? Rich. I’d love to build myself a castle and live there peacefully. Fame is not for me.
Amount of sleep: Never enough.
What I’m wearing: Everything black. Although, I’m not an emo or a goth. I just like black a lot. And I’ve got lots of black clothes left from the two mourning periods that have happened during the last couple of years. Honestly, everything in my wardrobe is either black or all kinds of blue with rare green/purple/grey colour accents.
Dream job: I don’t have one and that’s why I’m never satisfied with what I do.
Dream trip: A tour around European castles, palaces, and royal gardens.
If you were an animal. What would you be? A dog, a horse or a bird. Preferably a bird cause it’s free and independent. A raven, maybe?
What are some of your favourite books/films/shows/games/etc.?
Books: I’m a bookworm. I love to read. Actually, I mostly read biographies of my favourite historical people. Aside from that, I read historical fiction, fantasy, horrors, and thrillers. Ram Setu, Thank God: Will Bollywood's Diwali releases create a dhamaka at the box office? - #BigStory
The festival of Diwali brings along a lot of cheer and like every business, even the film industry waits for a dhamaka with their festive releases. The past few months have not been great for Hindi movies and given the fact that none of the festive releases this year, be it Heropanti 2, Runway 34, or Laal Singh Chaddha, Rakshabandhan, have performed upto the mark. All eyes are now on the two Diwali releases — Ajay Devgn, Siddharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet starrer Thank God, and Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandes and Nushrratt Bharuccha starrer Ram Setu — to work their magic at the ticket windows.
If we look back at the performances of Bollywood’s Diwali release over the past decade, the collections have almost always been impressive. While Ra.One (2011) grossed about Rs 221 crore worldwide, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) collected Rs 235 crore. In the same year, Son of Sardaar grossed Rs 163 crore despite a clash. The following year, Krissh 3 shattered records with a worldwide gross collection of about Rs 384 crore, which was soon broken by Happy New Year next year as the film collected Rs 385 crore. In 2015, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo collected Rs 395 crore which has been the highest for a Diwali release. In 2016, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil clashed with Shivaay. While ADHM collected Rs 229 crore, Shivaay ended up with Rs 124 crore. Golmaal Again (2017) earned Rs 311 crore while Thugs of Hindostan (2018) amassed Rs 320 crore despite poor reviews. 2019 releases Housefull 4, Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh registered collections of Rs 280 crore, Rs 12.78 crore and Rs 23.67 crore respectively. Diwali in 2020 saw films clashing on OTT due to the pandemic but the following year when theatres reopened, Sooryavanshi brought back festive cheer with a collection of about Rs 295 crore worldwide.
This year, both Thank God and Ram Setu have had their share of controversies ahead of their release, but yet the kind of buzz that Diwali releases create every year has been amiss. Besides there are some promising regional films like Gandhada Gudi, Sardar, Padavettu and Har Har Mahadev vying for the audiences’ attention. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has also hit the screens this week and there is massive buzz around it already. Amidst all the noise, will Bollywood be able to revive its magic? Will Ram Setu and Thank God create a Diwali dhamaka at the box office?
In today’s #BigStory, we reached out to filmmakers and trade analysts to find out. Read on.
Thank God vs Ram Setu
While the advance bookings for Thank God and Ram Setu look neck-to-neck, trade circuit predicts the collections may not be that impressive as other Diwali releases. Film distributor and analyst Raj Bansal has his doubts. “There is no excitement around both the films and the audience have not been going to the theatres like they used to. The content of the films is a big factor. It’s always the family entertainment films that work on Diwali. So out of the two, I feel Thank God will take over Ram Setu,” he says.

I'm living for your recommendations, you're a star! Similar to the recent ask, do you have any favourite period drama Indian films? And films about diaspora Indian kids (kind of like Namastey London)?
You’re just in time. I was on Tumblr checking out the marvel tags. Some of my favorite period drama Indian films:
Lagaan: Once Upon Time in India - The people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers. It features Aamir Khan who’s done films like Three Idiots, PK and even Dangal.
Lootera - An aristocrat’s daughter falls in love with a visiting archaeologist, but he holds a secret that could drive them apart. (honestly, one of Bollywood’s best films easily, and it’s so goddamn underrated.)
Rustom - In 1959, a decorated naval officer is accused of murdering his wife’s lover. (this movie…..bitch, I got shook by the story. So captivating)
Jodhaa Akbar - Epic romance, set in 16th-century India, about the love story between Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, the Mughal Emperor of Hindustan, and Rajput princess Jodhaa. In order to extend his empire, Akbar agrees to a marriage of alliance to young and fiery Jodhaa but soon realizes he has to defend his choice of bride as his courtiers voice their displeasure at the idea of their Muslim Emperor marrying a Hindu.
Girl…..I’m in love. The chemistry. Visuals. Background. Music. Acting. I’m done.
Devdas - After his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with, Devdas Mukherjee’s life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain.
As for similar movies like Namstey London, it’s tricky. Though I can give you films that have a similar storyline or settings. Although, there is a sequel that will be releasing in October 2018, if all goes well. I think it’s called Namastey England. Af first, I was so against it because I wanted the original leads to be in it. But the lead couple playing in it also played a Romeo-and-Juliet adaptation which became one of my favorites. And so, I’m kind of interested now.
Let’s see. I would recommend the following.
Swades - A successful Indian scientist returns to an Indian village to take his nanny to America with him and in the process rediscovers his roots.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania - Badrinath Bansal from Jhansi and Vaidehi Trivedi from Kota belong to small towns but have diametrically opposite opinions on everything. This leads to a clash of ideologies, despite both of them recognizing the goodness in each other. At one point, they even move to Singapore.
(Although I would caution watching due to sensitive topics discussed in the movie).
English Vinglish - A quiet, sweet tempered housewife endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter everyday because of her inability to speak and understand English.
It touches on the huge issue of language/culture barrier. And Sridevi, may she rest in peace, is such a fantastic actress.
Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham - Rahul, the adoptive son of business magnate Yash Raichand, feels eternal gratitude to his father for rescuing him from a life of poverty. Yet, when Yash forbids his love of poor Anjali, Rahul marries her and moves to London with new wife and sister-in-law, Pooja, breaking the heart of his mother. Ten years later, Rahul’s younger brother comes to London intent on brokering peace between father and son.
And that’s all I can think of for that one. Sorry I wasn’t able to give you more than enough.
- Sonia

2 years ago, director Milap Zaveri unleashed his 2.0 avatar with the action thriller Satyameva Jayate, starring John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee. The film might have been slammed by the high-nosed intellectuals but the masses went crazy over the film, making it one of the biggest hits of 2018. His next flick, Marjaavaan (2019), starring Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh, too was a decent success and it made it clear that Milap is a darling of the masses and here to stay. Hence, the expectations from Satyameva Jayate 2 have been tremendous. Today, the film’s new poster was unveiled showing John Abraham in what looks like a macho, farmer avatar with tricolour-coloured blood dripping from his body. It has already added excitement for the film by many notches.
Interestingly, the poster also mentions that the film will be released on Eid, on May 12, 2021! Now we all know that since 2009, Eid has been reserved for Salman Khan biggies. This year, his much awaited flick Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai was to release on the festival. But due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it has got indefinitely delayed. There are speculations in the trade circles that Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai might now arrive directly on Eid 2021, although the makers haven’t made the official announcement.
When Bollywood Hungama asked Milap Zaveri, the writer-director seemed unfazed and made it clear that their Eid release plan is on. He says, “Satyameva Jayate 2 will 100% be released on Eid, irrespective of whichever other film releases on the same day. In the event of a clash happening on Eid, I hope the other film also does well and so does our film.”
He also assures that in the age of OTT releases, Satyameva Jayate 2 will make it to theatres, “By next Eid, I expect cinemas to be packed and fully operational. And our attempt is to release the film in cinemas. That’s why, we have specifically mentioned ‘in cinemas’ on our posters as well. And of course, as I said, we will not move for any other film.”
In the pre-lockdown era, clashes, though not recommended by trade experts, had become commonplace. Satyameva Jatate had released alongside Akshay Kumar’s sports flick Gold on Independence Day. A year later, on Independence Day 2019, John and Akshay had clashed again, with Batla House and Mission Mangal respectively. All these films managed to do well and didn’t eat into each other’s business. However, things have changed in the post-lockdown scenario. The number of films has reduced as many have gone straight to digital. Cinemas, especially single screens, often suffer due to clashes. Hence, the belief was that clashes would become passé from now on, at least for a few years.
When asked about this aspect, Milap Zaveri makes a valid point that the Eid spot was lying vacant and hence they grabbed it. He retorts, “We have announced first. No other film was scheduled for release on Eid next year.”
Besides John Abraham, Satyameva Jayate 2 also stars Divya Khosla Kumar. Earlier, it was scheduled to release on October 2, 2019 but the lockdown led to a change in plans. In the meanwhile, the script was also tweaked and it’s now set in Lucknow.
